My Green Closet…we are, first and foremost, a socially and environmentally responsible company that just happens to make super cute kid's clothes. My Green Closet was created when we began to read and learn more about the issues of sweatshops and conventional cotton. The more we learned, the more inspired we became to
do something, and thus, My Green Closet was born.
ABOUT OUR CLOTHES
Fabric Currently, all of our fabrics are made from 100% certified organic cotton. It has been certified by Control Union Certifications (formerly known as SKAL International). That means no fertilizers or toxic pesticides contributed to the shirt on your child’s back or to the contamination of our soil and water. Click here for more information on these
Sustainable Textile Standards. In the future, we would like to include organic wool and recycled fabrics too.
Low-Impact Dyes Fabric dyes are also an important issue regarding the environment. The perfect environmental solution is to not have your clothes dyed at all, but we feel it would be a bad business decision to offer only “natural” as a color option. We believe if you want color, low-impact dyes are the best way to go for quality and the environment. Low-impact dyes are all that we use in our fabrics. All low-impact dyes are synthetic. What makes them low-impact is that they contain no heavy metals or toxins. They also have an extremely high absorption rate, so less is needed to achieve the desired color. Low-impact dyes also require less water and can be infused at much lower temperatures, which takes less energy.
Natural dyes are another option. As the name implies, these dyes are non-synthetic. Sometimes, but not always, low-impact dyes are actually better than natural dyes for the environment. Often large quantities of the natural dye source are needed to create the color. Also, to get the natural dye to stick to the fabric a mordant is applied. Sometimes, but not always, this mordant is toxic. Quality is another issue when comparing natural to low-impact dyes. Natural dyes will fade faster and more drastically than almost all low-impact dyes.
Fair Labor We make all of our clothes here in the USA and follow fair and legal labor practices. That means you can feel good buying clothes from My Green Closet knowing that you are also helping other people make a good honest living.
Our Business Practices All of our paper products such as business cards, brochures, hang tags, fax and printer paper are made from recycled material and printed with soy based inks. All of our packaging and shipping goods have at least 30% recycled content and were ordered from a local business. Our clothes are made only 120 miles from our distribution center! We are striving to be a truly Green Business.
Giving Back We give a portion of all our sales to various local and international organizations that protect the earth and its inhabitants.
